Identifying Phrasal Verbs

I really admire my Uncle Mario. I have always looked up to him as someone I can go for advice. What is nice, is  that now and then he comes to me. My Uncle Mario is looking for a new apartment. He spent the weekend looking through the newspapers trying to find something in his price range. He decided he needed some advice so he looked up my phone number in his address book and called me. The next day we spent the afternoon looking at some possibilities in Santo Domingo, the capital of teh Dominican Republic.  He was looking for a bargain but I told him to look out for flats which needed a lot of work. In every flat we looked over the electrics and the plumbing. All the the flats we saw were quite pricey so we looked into the possibility of getting a mortgage from the bank. In the end we managed to find the perfect flat and Uncle Mario is really looking forward to moving in. It was pricey but I think Uncle Mario will look after it well.

Grammar Point: Phrasal Verbs

A phrasal verb is a verb plus a preposition or adverb which creates a meaning different from the original verb.

Example:  To look up----- To look is a verb and up is a preposition. The new phrase means to find information or to admire someone.

Quinceañera... A Spanish Rite of Passage Celebration...

What does it mean to be a quinceañera?

The meaning
In many Latin-American countries, 14-year-old girls can hardly wait for their next birthday. They look forward to their quinceañera (KEEN-say-ahn-YEH-ruh), a special 15th-birthday celebration for girls. On this day, a girl becomes a young woman in the eyes of her family and friends.

The origin

 The quinceañera tradition goes back hundreds of years. It probably began with the Aztecs, in an area that is now part of Mexico. At that time, a girl of 15 was considered an adult, old enough to get married. Since then, the tradition has changed and spread. 

Today, quinceañeras are celebrated in most of Latin America, and in the United States. Modern quinceañeras are big events. The girl wears a fancy dress, and sometimes even a crown. Friends and relatives bring special gifts. There is delicious food, a beautiful cake, and dancing late into the night. A quinceañera is more than just a party. It includes ceremonies to show that the girl is growing up. For example, during the event, the girl’s father takes off her flat slippers and places high-heeled shoes on her feet instead. A quinceañera is a goodbye to childhood. It’s a day to celebrate the future. For many girls, it’s the best day of their lives.

Choosing the Right Pet

Choosing a pet can be a very tedious process. When choosing a pet, we must keep in mind the amount of space that we have available, the budget, and be able to spend time with the pet. Many pets have high or low demands for these needs. The space available is a very important factor. For example, cats and dogs need a vast amount of space because they need to run. Whereas people who live in small houses or apartments are better off selecting pets that don’t need much running space. Such as, birds, turtles, or fishes.

The amount of money that we have available to maintain a pet is also very important. The bigger the animal is, the more food it’s going to consume. Not only do they need to eat, but also, the owner need to provide them the care they need. Pet owners must provide their animals with a comfortable space where they are able to play, eat, run, and do all the things their pets need. Animals, just like people, also need attention and love. Animals such as cats and dogs deserve and need a lot of attention. If a person cannot commit to spend some hours a day with their pet or dog, then it would be much better to get a fish or a hamster; these animals do not need as much attention, as they previously mentioned.

Choosing the right pet for my daughter was a very complicated process. My fiancée and I were not sure about which animal would be ideal to have at home. After doing some research, we decided to get chickens. We have six lovely chickens. They don't require a lot of attention. We leave enough food for them every other day, and we also let them out of their cage, at least once a week, so they can run and play with our daughter in the backyard.

People have to do a lot of thinking and planning ahead before purchasing the right pet. They have to look over the correct amount of space, the stability of the budget, and having the correct time schedule for having a pet to bring home.
